Mathias Joseph Alten was a German born American painter who made his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His oil paintings draw on Impressionism through free brushwork and an interest in outdoor light. Farms, working horses and flower gardens reflect his attachment to the land, while his travels brought coastal views and European scenes.
