The painting in question is titled "Napoleon at the St. Bernard Pass" and was painted by Jacques-Louis David. However, it is more commonly known as "Napoleon Crossing the Alps" or "Bonaparte at the St. Bernard Pass." The painting depicts Napoleon Bonaparte on horseback crossing the Alps with his army in May 1800. The painting was commissioned by Charles IV, then King of Spain, to be hung in a gallery of paintings of other great military leaders housed in the Royal Palace in Madrid. The painting is an idealized view of the actual crossing that Napoleon and his army made along the Alps through the Great St Bernard Pass. The painting is considered one of the most successful portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte ever made and has become one of the most commonly reproduced images of him. The painting is housed at the Château de Malmaison in Rueil-Malmaison, France.
